Chapter 1: The Mirror of Life I 've repeatedly said that the end makes the best beginning, so that is where we will start with Agnes ...
Thank you SO much for everything you've posted, it's such a delight to be able to read and see so many new things! You've really made my week!
ReplyDeleteI've gone through the original letter beacuse I found some bits of the transcript confusing, and albeit I can't vouch for any of this as it's truly hard to decipher, I have alternate interpretations of some words or phrases if you're interested to give them a thought.
- I think it might say 'the IDEA of Don Washauer and your little self disarranged' and I take it to mean that she wonders whether the story of whatever happened between Margaret and DW somehow found its way to Frank.
- '... and my ? self ? rebels to the STATE of murder when FP is MENTIONED' - here I don't think it says 'self suicide' but can't figure out what it is. I take it to mean that Agnes is so angry with Frank that the very mention of him makes her want to murder him
- ...and now you know how I feel toward Jack, yet I WANT ADVICE' - I think that's what's written and I guess she's kind of asking Margaret what to do with that relationship as she's unsure.
- 'Monday, the FATAL DAYS to be ?' - can't decipher the last word.
No idea if this is of any use, but felt like contributing to thank you for your effort.
I'm open to suggestions for sure. The letter is incredibly difficult to just look at and read. It sounds like you and I got stuck in the same spots so I'll look at it again and if we can match up your findings and mine we'll have our answer for those really difficult to read sections. This is exactly why I posted the actual letter so we'd have ideas flying around until we get the mystery sections pulled apart and correct! Thanks for this I appreciate all of your input. Two heads are better than one and two sets of eyes rarely miss the same things. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind reply! I hope more readers will weigh in and we'll eventually get a final deciphered version.
DeleteIt's hard not only because of the peculiar handwriting she uses and occasional archaic phrases or euphemisms, but also, I think, because it's essentially a diary entry, meant for her eyes only, so she doesn't provide us with any context that would help us make sense out of some sentences. I'm particularly confused as to why she thinks Monday 'was the beginning'. Whatever the case may be, it's apparent that neither Agnes nor her mother were completely surprised by what happened. It didn't exactly come out of the blue.
What makes this letter even sadder is that it seems Agnes put it to paper because she couldn't discuss what had happened to anyone, so she discussed it with herself. That's genuinely heartbreaking.
Dear Tamela I’ve finally finished reading it. Thank you so much for researching and documenting in addition to offering your insights on Aggie’s life. It is heart wrenching and I now understand why she did so many things her way in her life. I have enjoyed reading it, but clearly had to read in increments as there was so much pain for her throughout her lifetime. Thank you again. You did a superb job and thank you for documenting so that everyone has the opportunity to read it๐น๐
